Howell Station, Knight Park and Bankhead, Georgia are thriving communities featuring charming historical residences and located northwest of downtown Atlanta. The Howell Station Historic District, which dates back to the post-Civil War era and can still be seen today, is also nearby. The district consists of houses, a recreational park, four historic churches and Marietta Street is the main corridor which runs through this area. Initial settlement in the area pre-dates the Civil War, but the area was destroyed during General William T. Sherman's March to the Sea in 1864. Interest in this region was renewed when real estate developers in the 1890’s laid out a grid pattern and subdivided the land into lots. This vicinity is often referred to as Knight Park, named for the park located in the northwest section of the neighborhood which has sloping hills, mature trees, open recreational space, a community building, along with outdoor courts for basketball and tennis. Bankhead is named after the route of the Bankhead Highway, a cross-country highway which once connected Washington and San Diego, which passed right through the neighborhood. Bankhead Highway in Atlanta has recently been renamed the Donald Lee Hollowell Highway in honor of the esteemed civil rights attorney. Bankhead has a station on the MARTA light rail system, which makes this a popular neighborhood for those that want to get around without the hassle of driving.
